About a year ago I purchased an Edge EZ for my 2005 Dodge Cummins. I have absolutely loved the performance gains and don't have a single complaint. However the best thing about it has been the fuel mileage increase. When I got the truck it was getting about 18 MPG HWY, now with the EZ on it I get at least 20 sometimes 21 MPG. Recently I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to dyno my truck for free so I jumped on it. Now I've never been one to want huge performance out of my truck, just simply better fuel mileage and engine longevity. So the Edge EZ is my only modification, might look at doing an air intake later down the line but that's another topic. I started off with a stock run and had 283.5 HP with 525.7 ft/lb. I wasn't overly impressed with this but like I said mainly looking for mileage and longevity. After the truck cooled down a little we went for round two this time with the Edge EZ turned on at the 65 HP setting. The second run showed 350.4 HP with 640.9 ft/lb torque.

I found those numbers to be somewhat impressive. I'll save you the trouble of doing the math. That was 66.9 HP gains and 115.2 torque gain. The dyno operator seemed to be extremely impressed with this because apparently most performance modifications have about a 20% reduction at the rear wheel from what the manufacturer actually claims. The EZ actually did better than what they claimed on horsepower but was under on the torque a little. I wasn't too disappointed with the under achieved torque because every other claim that Edge made has been one hundred percent accurate. This module has given me great take off response, it definitely gets better MPGs, and it shifts better now than it ever did. I doubt I will ever upgrade to a more powerful module but if I do I'm going to stick with Edge because they tell you exactly what the product is going to do for you and don't try to sugar coat it.

Ford offers their ‘minibus' in a 12, 15 and 17 seat version which follows their traditional size ranges, this gives their customers a good variety of choices. There are also various engine options available as well as front or rear wheel drive transmissions. Ford offers a whole host of optional extras plus they provide you with a good standard option model that includes power assisted steering, left hand sliding side door and step and even heated rear windows. There is a passenger assist grab handle and side and rear door step illumination as well as non slip passenger steps for easy entry. All Transit Minibuses have a ‘Safeguard' passive anti-theft system immobilizer, high security locks and a visible Vehicle Identification Number. The interior design of the Transit Minibus is utilitarian, it is tough and durable, it is not a thing of beauty, it is a thing of use. This vehicle is built in this fashion as a response to the needs and desires of purchasers in this sector. The quality assures that the Transit Minibus is not likely to come apart at every seam with rough treatment or prolonged useage. Along with a petrol engine, there is also an option for a diesel powered enging in either a 2.0 or 2.4 litre turbo diesel version, there is also a choice of TDdi or TDCi engine technology. TDdi is basically a conventional turbocharged diesel engine while the TDCi engine is the more advanced common rail configuration. Ford's goal has been to drive down the cost of ownership while also improving fuel economy and reducing maintenance costs by extending the service intervals to every 15,000 miles.

The Ford Minibus has a good ventilation system that has easy to use controls. They are positioned high up in the dashboard allowing more room for the radio cassette player audio system and added storage for drinks, documents and mobile phones. The vehicle is easy to handle and pleasant to drive. The ABS braking system that comes standard in all models is responsive and the handling is somewhat nimble for the class of vehicle, made even better by the traction control on the more powerful 2.4 litre models. The ride is comfortable and the steering systems, responds reliably. This Minibus would place well amongst the best driving panel vans currently on the market. The exterior of this minibus isn't beautiful but it also isn't an eyesore by any means. It sports a sleek, sloped font end that is somewhat sporty looking but also adds to the aerodynamics of the vehicle. The high roofline means lots of headroom for people moving about in the cabin. The wheelbase of this vehicle is well set, balancing the vehicle well on the tires, this accounts for a goodly portion of the vehicles handling prowess for the class of vehicle it is. This vehicle isn't likely to turn heads or even catch an eye, unless you're waiting for a ride on it. It is for all intents and purposes a nicely designed utilitarian vehicle that offers quality, comfort and durability. What more could you ask for from a vehicle of this nature?

The good news is that September sales are up in comparison to September of last year. This comes from a recent report that shows from the beginning of September when the new 09 plates became available and during the full month, approximately 368,000 vehicles were registered with the new '59 number plate. According to the SMMT, which is the government's vehicle scrapping scheme, the offerings have been extended and they have played a large part in the increased September sales. This doesn't however mean that the conditions are not still a challenge in the retail auto marketplace. The beleaguered automobile retail industry welcomed the scheme, which has been pushed within the cabinet by Lord Mandelson, the business secretary. The introduction of a vehicle scrappage scheme boosted the new car market, and encouraged consumers step foot back into the new car showrooms, and as a result, reduced the likelihood of employee downsizing.," Paul Everitt, chief executive of trade body the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), said: "This is very good news for car and light-vehicle buyers. It will kick-start demand in the market place." The car industry needed to contribute £1,000 to the grant and the scheme was not restricted to greener vehicles.

The government had originally set aside three hundred million pounds to fund the scrappage scheme, when it was introduced earlier in the year. This release came on the heels of the successful plans put into use in other countries. The scheme basically provided owners of vehicles that were ten years old or older and who had retained ownership for twelve months or longer, up to two thousand pounds for turning over their vehicle for scrap. The money was provided specifically in order to fund a portion of the cost of a new vehicle. It was believed that this funding would hold out till approximately February of 2010, consumer interest and use of the scheme was much higher than was expected and concerns began to surface as to whether or not the funding would run out quite a bit earlier than originally anticipated. T

he government recently agreed to extend the scrappage scheme adding another one hundred million pounds to fund the project. This added amount is considered enough to be able to continue funding the project until at least February as it was originally planned. It is believed that because of this extension in funding, use of the scrappage scheme would remain high throughout the year and into the first part of next year. Part of the result of this is projected to be a boost to the economic recovery and the general strengthening of the economy. On the other hand, the AA warned that a ‘shock increase in fuel duty, which was also announced, would more than cover the scrappage scheme's costs and was for all intents and purposes, giving with one hand while taking away with the other. It remains to be seen, what the full impact of the scrappage scheme will be on the auto industry, so far the numbers appear to be staying positive, however the economy is still stalled and only time will tell if this project will help to kick start it and get it moving in a forward direction again.

Ford to sell Volvo

Ford has been focusing on selling the Volvo name plate as it has been a money loosing venture for them for a while now. They are currently negotiating with U.S. based bidders and are working towards narrowing the talks down to one potential buyer. The Crown Group, which is headed by Michael Dingman, a former Ford director (from 1981 to 2002), his son James Dingman and Shamel Rushwin, who is a former manufacturing and labor executive for the automaker, is currently a front runner to the purchase of Volvo. Ford has succeeded in being the only major U. S. auto manufacturer that has avoided bankruptcy. They are working on making themselves leaner by shedding the international luxury lines in order to focus on its own name badge products, believing it will again become profitable by 2011.

Crown, who entered into negotiations with Ford about two months ago, has offered less than the two billion Geely Holding Group Co, offered. Volvo has not lost favor as a brand, it still has its loyalists and still has a good name, sales have just stalled. This company can and will succeed if it is purchased by a company that allows the people that know Volvo the best to do what they do best. Crown is working towards that goal by trying to attract former Volvo executives as equity partners. Those being sought after include Roger Holtback, who was chief executive officer of the Swedish auto manufacturer in the lat 1980s.

Ford is hoping to finish negotiations and conclude a successful sale during this quarter. They may be narrowing the list of bidders down to one in just a couple of weeks. Geely is currently China's biggest private automaker and they are currently the most likely successful bidder in a bidding war that started more than a year ago. Everyone in Ford, Crown and Geely are being hush hush about the progress of negotiations and which way they might go. Ford will continue to be the supplier of engines and other components for Volvo is working the protection of its intellectual property into the negotiations. Ford needs to be very careful about intellectual property but that is pretty difficult. It is possible to be so closed mouth about intellectual property that you end up damaging the product and damaging the relationships with the auto makers who take over the Volvo nameplate. Still in negotiation are the responsibilities of liabilities such as pensions. Ford is looking to sell Volvo for approximately 2 billion dollars. This less than a third of what the automaker paid for the nameplate ten years ago. Ford had a ‘pre-tax' loss of 231 million in the second quarter compared with 120 million lost in the full year prior. Investors seem to be happy about Ford's decision, as the Ford stocks rose .21 cents to $7.05 in composite trading on the New York Stock Exchange. I'm sure we'll see some upcoming changes in Volvo after the new ownership takes over and starts investing moneys and ideas in this old standard.
